A series of lens based works which take the form of staged, social interactions to camera, investigating computer human interaction and the ‘intactable’ supernatural nature of minerals and metals present within computer technology.
I have chosen for this project the title of Rapture in Xe6s (Xe6s being part of the electronic structure code for Lanthanide)
Lanthanide is a rare earth mineral, collectively known as a transition metal and part of the gold series, part of its characteristics is that it physically facilitates electrical connections. Blue Green in color it is used in cathodes, capacitors, electronics, lenses, computer screens and chemical processing equipment.
For Homeopathic practitioners Lanthanide draws parallels with the rise of the electronic man. According to the philosopher Marshall Mcluhan in his essay Understanding Media (1964)
'.. An electronic nervous system is rapidly integrating the planet . .(and) we have extended ourselves into its global embrace'.
Homeopaths postulate that anonymous, global communications informed by the internet have now started to affect the bodies life maintaining boundary. Lanthanides are thus being administered to treat such conditions.

‘Know that the first Tincture and Root of all Metals, is likewise a supernatural, flying, fiery Spirit’ Basilius Valentinus. 1671

Rapture in Xe6s will seek to connect to the rare earth minerals inherit within the collapse of massed, barely functional salvaged equipment and software systems, creating realtime graphical processes which cross the division of code and matter, through resonance, ‘entrainment’ and the reading of the energetic signature of vibrations which emanate therein.

Introduction text written towards a new publication covering my recent show ‘Arcade’

The qualities that often constitute the aura of artworks which are built out of computers have a tendency to often sharply differentiate audiences. The sensual pleasure of being bathed in dynamic light may not always be accessible to all when such work is located in a contemporary art space. The seductive abandonment of oneself to works in which the conception and technical delivery are cloaked in a mystic technological virtuosity may raise joy in some, but mistrust in others. The belief that needs to be invoked to enable the critical appraisal of any artwork normally requires an understanding and insight which seems to be rare in those appraising works which are built around a palette of arcane software and glittery hardware.

Jaygo Bloom knows and understands this and presents works which offer the joy of sensory abandonment while also offering a very courteous nod to the dominant mores of cultural historiography. Like the work of his US counterpart, Cory Archangel, Bloom relishes the resonances of a youth spent clinging to the joystick, but is smart enough to know that once a work enters the gallery it will need to dot the I’s and cross its T’s before acceptance into the canon of contemporary practice.

But post rationalisation is maybe not such a bad thing. Even when it does little more than build a pathway to the work, marking out a journey which adds indulgences to some particular pilgrims. For work which is generated entirely out of pre-conceived notions of ones place in the lineage of art history will be stale and didactic, while the work of Bloom is anything but. The work in the exhibition ‘Arcade’ is bright and dynamic and uses that purest of media, light, to conjure up apparitions of sculpture come alive, of shapes whose sustained existence as solid objects is teased by the changing patterns of digital colour that race across surfaces, rendering in real-time and real space what may have only been seen before on a computer screen. The work cites Calder, Malevich and Albers, but ultimately is the product of much, much, more and often, thankfully, much less.

Syphon And Kinect

SYPHON

Today each visual app or VJ app is a closed system. You create your graphics and it is then sent to your output.
The output of the app is locked. It cannot be altered after it leaves the app.

Imagine if you had two apps each producing a live stream of realtime graphics on the one computer.
Up until now there has been no good way to combine the outputs of those two apps into one image stream in real time. If you wanted to create a background in Resolume and a generative particle effect in Processing, you would have to save one of them as a file and then import this saved movie into the other app, or you would have to use a screen grabber to catch the image from one app and put it into the other in real time. All this uses a lot of process power on your computer and tends to slow down the performance of the apps, due to the need of two apps open at one.

Syphon runs in the background, it allows you to work in two video software environments simultaneously, yet without the need to have both platforms open at the same time. It works as a bridge between any video processing environment and allows applications to ‘talk to each other’ and exchange graphics in real time without any delay or loss of image quality.


KINECT

Kinect hacking, worldwide, continues unabated, taking the gamers tool from proof-of-concept depth tests to something that could actually prove the basis of real media. The killer app, it seems, will be interactive art, as Kinect’s ability to interact with someone in space is ideal for the kinds of interactions designers need – perhaps, ironically, more so than in games.

Most promising of all, Robert Praxmarer writes to share his team’s work on skeletal tracking, top. This is really the magic of Kinect: beyond just tracking depth, once you have a notion of a human skeleton, you can really begin to interact with movement, opening up seriously powerful possibilities for spatial interaction and dance. Robert comes from a “newly-formed research new media lab in Austria called CADET – Center for Advances in Digital Entertainment Technologies.”

Game design with something like Kinect is no small challenge, which is why the launch lineup on the Xbox itself – with the possible exception of Harmonix’s dance game, Dance Central – has been deemed disappointing by many early adopters and critics. To really explore the medium’s possibilities, it may be absolutely essential to get independent designers working on the problem, freed from the pressures of the commercial game development pipeline. Accordingly, the Austrian team isn’t just doing interesting analyses. They’re putting that work to the test with an open-source Kinect game that uses generative realtime graphics and a rich musical soundtrack.

Participants covered the basics of Video Mapping, and constructed a a digital environment using cardboard boxes and multiple projections.

The main goal of this workshop was to assist participants in exploring video work in a whole new spectrum of possibilities offered by the space itself.

How can we interact in a playful and meaningful way with our environment ?

How can we extend the architecture and environment to make meaning interfaces which facilitate playful interaction?

What artistic concepts can we invent to challenge the design of our future environment?

Throughout the workshop students from the Architecture and Media Arts Department explored various mapping techniques and softwares available that can be applied to different spaces and objects.
Each participant created elements towards the final presentation, using pictures, text, videos and 3d animation.
Ultimately the goal was to translate the surface measurements into a visually coordinated system and a creative collaborative projection.

In his influential text “The Sublime and the Avant-Garde,” Jean-François Lyotard writes that modernist art reflects an extreme state of insecurity, which is a consequence of artists rejecting the help that art schools can offer all the programs, methods, and techniques that could allow the artist to work professionally and remaining alone. For Lyotard life is within the artist, and it is this inner life that begins to manifest itself after all the external conventions of art are removed. But the conviction that the artist rejects school to become sincere, to be able to manifest his or her inner self, is one of the oldest myths of modernism: the myth in which avant-garde art is an authentic creation in opposition to the mere reproduction of the past, of the given.

Art is proclaimed to be an expression of the artist’s true identity, or at least as a deconstruction of this identity.

Malevich describes a range of art styles—“Cézannism,” Cubism, and Suprematism, among them—as effects of different aesthetic infections metabolized in the artist by bacilli of one aesthetic kind or another. That is to say, they were triggered by new visual forms and impressions produced by modern life. So Malevich compares the straight lines of Suprematism (which he introduced into painting, according to his own view) to the bacillus of tuberculosis, whose organic form is also rectilinear. Just as a bacillus modifies the body, so too are the sensibility and nervous system of the artist modified by novel visual elements introduced into the world by new technical and social developments. The artist “catches” them with the same sense of risk and danger.

Artists need to modify the immune system of their art in order to incorporate new aesthetic bacilli, to survive them and find a new inner balance, a new definition of health.

From Flaubert, Baudelaire, and Dostoyevsky, by way of Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, to Bataille, Foucault, and Deleuze, modern artistic thought has acknowledged as a manifestation of the human much of what was previously considered evil, cruel, and inhuman. Just as in the case of art, these authors and many others have not only accepted as human what reveals itself as human but also what reveals itself as inhuman. The point for them was not to incorporate, integrate or assimilate the alien into their own world but, conversely, to enter into the alien and become alien to their own tradition. They manifest an inner solidarity with the Other, with the alien, even with the threatening and cruel, and this takes us much further than a simple concept of tolerance. Over the course of modern art, all of the criteria that could clearly distinguish the work of art from other things were called into question. Sometimes a thing was conceived from the outset as a work of art; sometimes it was considered art only by its introduction into the gallery or museum. It is the case of contemporary art and its teaching that the concept of art per se cannot be reduced and cannot be taught within former limitations, as it has been so pervasively influenced by the will to Otherness.

Yukiko Shikata is an independent curator & critic based in Tokyo, she is working as an associate curator of Mori Art Museum (MAM), guest curator of Shiseido CyGnet and specially-assigned professor at Tokyo Zokei University. Her works include projects at Canon ARTLAB, Mischa Kuball "Power of Codes - Space for Speech"(Tokyo National Museum, 1999), "art.bit collection"(NTT ICC, curatorial support, 2002), "Kingdom of Piracy" and "OPEN MIND" CD (MAM, 2002). She is curatorial committee member of eyebeam (NY) and international advisory board member of Transmediale (Berlin). Open Space includes a gallery, a library, a mini-theater, and a lounge. All are open to the public, free of charge, throughout the year. In line with the philosophy behind all ICC activities, we not only offer exhibitions that introduce ever more people to leading-edge artistic expression and the possibilities of a communication-rich culture, but also make available a wide variety of materials from past activities, including a video archive. A new "Kids' Lounge" for children has also been created, adding to the exhibits of media art works by prominent Japanese and overseas artists that explain in an easy-to-understand manner the relationship between "media technology and artistic culture," as well as a corner introducing emerging artists.

Minoru Hatanaka has been involved with the curation of Japanese Media Arts since its early beginnings, he has also developed a long standing position as one of Tokyos eminent electro acoustic performers.
The space he is now in charge of is very impressive as is the work shown. I managed to catch a mesmerising collection of KOSHIDA NAORIKO’S Video Works.

We are in Tokyo for Five nights, performing at the grand club AGEHA on the outskirts of the city.

We have been put up in a really nice hotel on the 16th floor in the centre of Shibuya; Youth Culture Central, overlooking the magestic crossroads made famous by documentary filmers the world over including Wim Wenders. I have never seen a city that is brighter at night than it is by day. This must surely affect your midset if prolonged for any long duration of time? The nightclub hosts the best looking soundsystem I have ever seen and also has an outdoor pool, the drinks are gratis, the people are kind and we have been living on four hours a night sleep like the rest of them over here, and it all seems really really natural.

All in all, enabling me to produce industry standard results at a fraction of the price and facilitated to the Kids as though it were magic.
I still need to tweek the values of the ultimatte box to reach the finest standards possible, but for an initial trial within workshop environment, I am very pleased with the outcome.

In early November I met with Peter Richardson the Project Director to discuss the possibility of using the labs facilities to help realise the 3D component of my artwork. He was very interested in the idea, and agreed to provide the equivalent of £20000 of post production services and assistance for a fee of £3500. We have provisionally agreed that I will begin work at VERL on April 4 2010.

Over the past 11 months I have developed experience in combining 3D software technique into my art practice. Fabricating artworks within a virtual 3D environment to ensure they relate to the physical dimensions and positioning of the projectors within the proposed environment. The virtual environment is also used to describe the passing of a light source across the object as it creates multiple shadows. At present this exists in a very rudimentary fashion as my skills are somewhat limited, but I can see how it can develop into a much stronger central component of my work.

I expect this next phase of development alongside VERL to enable me with the skills to successfully express the notion of 'duration' within the artwork, this will be achieved through making evident a direct relationship between time and the passing of projected light around the art object, e.g. creating a realtime visualisation process so that in a 24 hour cycle no two moments are ever the same - A virtual relationship with a physical duration . . .

He is more commonly regarded as a British Scratch Video artist, and his early works demonstrate his cut and paste skills in fusing dance music and appropriated TV footage to great skill. It is however his more experimental works which I am drawn to, early processing hardware and suitiably punk / glitch before digital aesthetics, enable George to present abstract works again fused with sound, capable of twisting the medium of video as it appears pliable like paint on the screen.

George currently teaches at the School of Creative Arts in London and is involved with the video organisation LUX.

Throughout the 1950s Josef Albers had created the works in his Homage to the Square series in sizes ranging from 16 x 16 inches to 40 x 40 inches. When asked by a leading critic on a visit to his Connecticut studio - ‘Professor Albers, in 1962 you suddenly began to work in the size of 48 x 48, and I wondered if this was your reaction as a European to the vaster scale of life in America or in fact to the American attempt to conquer space and reach larger dimensions?’ Albers looked at him and said ‘young man that was the year we got a bigger station wagon.’

A High Culture / Popular Culture mash up
Repetition as a technique becomes another means by which to deconstruct the work Major Havoc, as users have the opportunity to break up the narrative structure of 3 early arcade game sounds - Archon 1983, Space Fury 1981 and Major Havoc 1983

Fixed controls within a custom made interface allows for interaction of tracks, cue points and beat signatures.
It is believed that loop usage is closely linked to our use of short time memory. Our experience of the presence lasts about three to five seconds,
from this one can draw the conclusion that interacting with loops transfers us into a state of eternal presence, of a now contradicting the continuous flow of time.

Funded by the PAUL HAMLYN foundation. Jaygo Bloom in collaboration with vocalists from the VOICELAB orchestra.
MAJOR HAVOC exchanges 8bit sounds from classic arcade games with 24bit tenor, alto, soprano and bass vocals, and combines these with the original version ready for realtime beat chopping and cue looping via games controller.

Truncated, repetitive, coin-operated nihilism. We were told that play would desensitise, depoliticise and disconnect us, and now games are presented by the museum as the latest historical and contemporary cultural artefacts. The time has come for arts institutions to intervene; playtime is over.

A question followed by another question stands at the beating heart of The Red Shoes. It’s an entirely rhetorical exchange, but it underscores the power and the mystery of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1948 masterpiece. For the respective speakers, a domineering impresario and a strong-willed ballerina, are talking about much more than dance. The real subject of their conversation, and of the film that contains it, is artistic dedication, even unto death.

JAYGO BLOOM has just finished work on a series of videos to accompany the FRANZ FERDINAND 2009 world tour. The videos have been specially created to be projected over a three projection array, covering an area over 70 feet wide and 20 feet high. Alongside the seriously awesome heavily graded color video montage, Jaygo created a trigger re-active visuals system for Paul Thomson’s drum kit running off ISADORA digital performance software.
PULSE FILMS duo ThirtyTwo also created part of the footage for this tour.

Following on from the success of our involvement with the AV Social Live at the Tate series. DECOLLAGE have produced an online blog documenting the works and artists featured, including the work O:.O:.O:.

AV Social is an audio-visual event series, that places international audio-visual live acts and art into a public, social happening with food and spirits.

The latest event in November 2008 took place in the Tate Liverpool as a “Late At Tate” program and the night was really nice with very positive feedback from all sides. Besides the live AV acts, one part of every AV Social happening is a screening of short movies with a balanced relation between what you hear and what you see.

The NEWFUTURENOW phenomenon continues next thursday, as Jaygo Bloom provides a dose of AV video medicine as part of MADE UP and the AV SOCIAL night coming live from the TATE LIVERPOOL

Prepare your retinas for the phenomenon that is Jaygo Bloom, aka Captain Captain, aka Pointless Creations, aka Whack Karaoke, aka aka aka. An energetic multi-disciplinary explosion of colour, Jaygo works bend video and graphic streams in the production of interactive installations, mashed up games systems and banging live performance.

JAYGO BLOOM recently premiered his new biologically governed open network WORLDWIDEWEGG. Which enabled chickens at Gorgie City Farm in Edinburgh to DJ throughout the run of the exhibition Alt-w: New Directions in Scottish Digital Culture at CCA Glasgow. Other projects range from a global grooves games console TAO JOYSTICK , an 8bit latino percussive interface MARRAKATTAK and an unwilling audience target device BUMP.

Working independently and as part of the Glasgow based audio visual team ‘Pointless Creations’, Jaygo Bloom has exhibited at Pixelazo 2007, Futuresonic 2006, Glasgow International 2005, Pixelache 2005 and Pong.Mythos.
